Leads

NOTE:

All vessels transiting the Gold Coast Seaway are required to have a current chart of the area.   For detailed procedures refer to MSQ QLD Port Procedures and Information for Shipping – Southport (pdf) at Port-procedures-southport .   Mariners should check MSQ   Notices-to-Mariners/southport for currency of the Leads information .

General Information.

There are no entrance leads for vessels approaching the Gold Coast Seaway from the NORTH. Vessels from the north should sail past the Seaway entrance to a Way Point at 27º56.33 S -153º26.95E and then follow the SE Clearance lead lining up the Green beacon (Porpoise Point) with the tallest tower at Bayview Harbour  (White light at night) on a bearing of 291ºTrue. When crossing the seaway look left and line up the Centre Line lead with the concrete structure on Wave Break Island (Blue light night) with the John Goleby Light (Yellow light Day, Blue light night) on a bearing of 255ºT.

Vessels approaching from the SOUTH can sail to the same Way Point and follow the same leads.

When departing the Seaway the Centre Line lead will be on a bearing of 075ºT and the SE clearance lead will be on a bearing of 111ºT.

THE JOHN GOLEBY LIGHT.

This is the new metal tower for The John Goleby Light that has replaced the original concrete tower constructed when the Gold Coast Seaway opened in 1986.

The light tower is located in Harley Park, Marine Parade, Labrador.

The John Goleby Light is the rear centre line lead light that is lined up with another structure on the Eastern side of Wavebreak Island for vessels entering the seaway. The light shines White during the day and Blue at night. The structure on Wavebreak Island has no day light but is Blue at night isolating every 4 seconds. Vessels intending to enter the Gold Coast Seaway from the south should first pick up the South Eastern lead by lining up the Green beacon(Porpoise Point) at the end of the north seaway wall with the light on top of Bay View Tower on a bearing of 291 deg True. Then turn left when lining up the structure on Wavebreak Island with The John Goleby Light on a bearing of 255 deg True which is the centre line of the seaway. As there is no leads from the north, vessels approaching from this direction are advised to sail past the seaway entrance then turn back to pick up the South Eastern lead. Vessels entering the seaway should have a local area chart that shows these leads to refer to.
